Families type practice in India after MBBS abroad when a relative says “the degree is valid” and an agent says “FMGE is easy after Georgia.” Those are different files. Can I practice in India after MBBS abroad?
Yes, if you are an Indian citizen or OCI, the foreign primary qualification can meet current NMC screening and (for post-18 November 2021 joiners) FMGL conditions, you qualify the screening exam in force, and you complete Indian internship and State Medical Council steps then in force. No if the campus fails FMGL, you skipped NEET on NMC’s abroad route, or you treat a foreign licence as an Indian one.
NMC’s For Students to Study Abroad page is blunt: an Indian citizen or OCI with a primary medical qualification awarded outside India who wants provisional or permanent registration on or after 15 March 2002 shall have to qualify a screening test, with limited historic exemptions described on that page (including certain pathways involving recognised qualifications / registration in specified countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK or the USA). Those exemptions are not the Russia / Georgia / Central Asia counselling universe Global Edge maps.
NBEMS describes FMGE as the Screening Test introduced through the Screening Test Regulations, 2002. It conducts the test, publishes the result, and hands results to NMC and State Medical Councils. Candidates must also satisfy NMC’s screening, Graduate Medical Education and eligibility rules.

Counsellor insight 1: Families ask “can I practise?” as if the answer lived in the country flag. NMC reads the legal campus, the internship letterhead, and the screening result. A popular destination with a split internship is still a no.
What happens after returning to India?
Typical foreign medical graduate India sequence after a compliant course: document the degree and foreign internship; sit FMGE (until NExT applies to your cohort); apply through the State Medical Council process NMC’s FMG registration guidelines still point to; complete the Indian internship then in force; then seek permanent registration. Dates, forms and seat allotment are state-wise. They are not a Global Edge package.
- Confirm the foreign degree and same-institution internship documents match the name on your offer — university verification.
- Apply for the live FMGE session. Use that session’s Information Bulletin, not a 2002 memory.
- After a pass, follow NMC’s FMG registration process and your State Medical Council’s current circular (provisional registration / internship allotment).
- Complete the Indian 12-month supervised internship NMC requires for permanent registration (FMGL joiners), in an allotted / recognised posting — slots are finite.
- Apply for permanent registration as the Council then requires. Only then is practice in India after MBBS abroad a legal sentence, not a hope.
Indian Express reported in 2026 that NBEMS would hold an additional FMGE sitting by the end of October, after protests over the June attempt. Treat that as a session fact. Re-check natboard.edu.in before you book travel.
Is an internship required after MBBS abroad?
Two internships for most post-18 November 2021 joiners — not one sold twice. FMGL requires a twelve-month internship in the same foreign institution where the primary qualification was obtained, in addition to at least fifty-four months of course. Permanent registration in India also requires a supervised twelve-month internship in India after applying to the Commission. The foreign year does not replace the Indian year.

No foreign medical graduate shall be granted permanent registration unless they have completed at least fifty-four months of course, a twelve-month internship in the same foreign institution, an English-medium degree, Schedule-I subjects, a local licence at par with citizens of the awarding country, a supervised twelve-month internship in India after applying to the Commission, and NExT or such other mandated test.

Internship after MBBS abroad in search language usually means the Indian year. Do not skip the foreign year because a consultant said “CRMI covers it.”
NMC’s FMG registration guidelines still tell Councils to run the present process until further Commission instructions or NExT implementation, whichever is earlier. They also describe an FMG internship allocation ceiling in Indian medical-college hospitals (published additional 7.5% of permitted seats in that text). That is a slot problem after you pass — not a reason to skip FMGL at admission.
Pipeline FMGs with COVID/war online years should read UGMEB’s 18 March 2026 compensation notice (6 March withdrawn). Extra Indian clerkship is not ordinarily required solely to duplicate documented onsite compensation at the parent institute — SMC still verifies. 2026 joiners: do not buy online/hybrid primary MBBS.

What is FMGE?
FMGE is the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination — India’s screening test for Indian citizens and OCIs with a foreign primary medical qualification who want registration. NBEMS conducts it under the Screening Test Regulations, 2002. Pattern, dates, qualifying marks and attempts are in that session’s bulletin, not in the original 2002 three-paper scheme. Passing is not a licence.
Who may apply (as NBEMS summarises it — confirm the live page):
- Indian citizen or OCI.
- A primary medical qualification confirmed by the concerned Indian Embassy as a recognised qualification for enrolment as a medical practitioner in the awarding country.
- Final-exam result declared on or before that session’s cut-off.
- Eligibility Certificate if applicable, plus provisional pass / degree documents.
NEET is the start gate on NMC’s student-abroad route from May 2018. FMGE is the return gate. They are not the same paper. Eligibility to go is MBBS abroad eligibility.

What is NExT — has it replaced FMGE?
NExT is the National Exit Test in the NMC Act and the National Exit Test Regulations, 2023. FMGL already names NExT or such other mandated test. As of 28 August 2026 that “other mandated test” is still FMGE: NBEMS is conducting it. Do not plan a 2026 return as if NExT had already switched off the screening calendar.

Myth: “NExT is already the exam, so I can ignore FMGE and skip Indian internship.”
Reality: FMG registration guidelines still run until NExT or further instructions. NBEMS still runs FMGE. Indian internship for permanent registration is in FMGL. Waiting for a WhatsApp timeline is not a licence strategy.
Can every foreign MBBS graduate practice in India?
No. Practice in India after MBBS abroad is not a right attached to any foreign diploma. Graduates from courses that fail current FMGL tests may be ineligible for FMGE. Graduates who never qualified NEET on NMC’s May 2018 abroad route are off that eligibility path. Even a pass does not guarantee an internship seat in the month you want it. NMC publishes no university whitelist that makes “every graduate” safe.
This is the India-family hour: loans paid for six years, then a queue.
- Campus first: Verify the legal name before you treat return as certain.
- Slots: FMG CRMI allotment is run by State Councils / directorates. The 7.5% ceiling in NMC’s FMG guidelines is why “I’ll intern anywhere in July” fails. Journalism of a 10 March 2026 UGMEB seat-matrix exercise (tens of thousands of FMG CRMI slots, 7.5% in established colleges, 100% in new/increased-intake seats) is a capacity story — print the NMC circular, not a reel.
- Money: MBBS abroad fees is the six-year worksheet. Add FMGE attempts and a possible wait for CRMI.
- Country is living: Georgia’s campus page is MBBS in Georgia. Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan sit on the hub until dedicated slugs are live. Flags do not issue Indian registration.
In Green Park the return files that stall are rarely “we didn’t know FMGE existed.” They are a missing same-institution internship letter, a degree name that does not match WDOMS, or a family who thought permanent registration arrived in the same envelope as the FMGE pass. The families who stay solvent treat CRMI allotment as a second admission.

What changed for returning FMGs in the last 18–24 months?
FMGL’s two-internship design did not vanish. What moved: 18 March 2026 online-compensation clarification; April 2026 named-campus caution (Uzbekistan reporting); June 2026 FMGE still conducted; journalism of an extra late-October 2026 FMGE sitting. NExT still has not switched the live screening exam off.
