Choose the campus that passes all twelve checks you can evidence, then pick among passers on living and money — not the reverse. Country is a filter (best countries). The university is the decision. NMC does not choose for you. There is no whitelist that finishes choosing a foreign medical university.
- Legal name. Copy the registrar’s English name and the local-script name. Drop Instagram titles. Fail: nickname ≠ offer. Ask: name on the degree. Verify: WDOMS + PDF.
- NEET. Qualifying NEET-UG inside NMC’s three-year window from declaration — is NEET required. Fail: “without NEET.” Ask: intake vs your declaration date. Verify: NTA scorecard.
- Duration. Course length in months (≥54 for FMGL joiners on/after 18 Nov 2021). Fail: compressed / hybrid primary course. Ask: months, not “six years.” Verify: circular.
- Internship. Twelve months in the same foreign institution — hospital letterhead matches the university. Fail: another country or “do it in India.” Ask: hospital legal name. Verify: letter vs offer.
- English. Medium of instruction for theory and clinical years, in writing. Fail: prospectus English only. Ask: language on the wards. Verify: MOI + clinical handbook.
- Curriculum. Schedule-I subjects / clinical postings you can map, not a slogan. Fail: missing postings. Ask: which posting, which year. Verify: curriculum PDF.
- Local licence. Whether a citizen graduate of that school may register to practise there. Fail: “international track, not for locals.” Ask: citizen licence path. Verify: regulator wording.
- NMC notices. Search nmc.org.in for that exact campus, branch, offshore pairing. Same hour: MEA travel advisories for that country — not a thirteenth check; it is whether the file is still a live destination. Fail: “not on the warning PDF, so approved.” Ask: any India-taught or branch name. Verify: dated NMC search + MEA page.
- WDOMS. search.wdoms.org as identity — listing ≠ Indian licence; Sponsor Note is a US/ECFMG extra. Fail: “WHO approved.” Ask: listing name vs offer. Verify: screenshot of the listing.
- Clinical training. Named teaching hospital, patient access, language on the wards (see below). Fail: mall-clinic photo. Ask: when clerkships start. Verify: hospital letterhead.
- Fee circular. All billed years, currency, fail-year fee, refund window — real cost for hidden lines. Fail: year-one package or “deposit non-refundable, trust us.” Ask: who keeps the money if the visa or NEET window fails. Verify: university circular.
- Payee and hostel. University account on the offer; housing contract in the student’s name. Do not pay a third-party “package” in cash. Fail: cash to a cousin. Ask: internship-year housing. Verify: IBAN + hostel PDF.
No foreign medical graduate shall be granted permanent registration unless they have completed at least fifty-four months of course, a twelve-month internship in the same foreign institution, an English-medium degree, Schedule-I subjects, a local licence at par with citizens of the awarding country, a supervised twelve-month internship in India after applying to the Commission, and NExT or such other mandated test.

Myth: “If I pay a small booking fee, I can verify later.”
Reality: Booking fees to third parties are how files leave the family before FMGL is checked. University verification is a pre-pay job. The detailed “is there an NMC list?” article is the sibling post. This list is what you withhold money for.

How do I evaluate clinical training?
Clinical training is not a campus photo. Ask: which legal hospital takes undergraduates; whether that hospital is the same institution FMGL requires for internship; what language is spoken with patients and supervisors; how early clerkships start; and whether Indian students are observers or have a logbook. A mall simulation lab is not a substitute for wards. If nobody will put the hospital name on letterhead, you cannot evaluate it.

Counsellor insight 2: Comfort (Indian mess, Hindi groups) is a living check. It is not a clinical check. The quiet campus with a busy same-entity hospital can beat the noisy campus with a rented clinic. Walk the ward question in the meeting. If the consultant cannot name the hospital, stop.
USMLE curiosity is a Sponsor Note on WDOMS, not a clinical-training substitute — career after MBBS abroad. Do not choose a school because a brochure said “USMLE country.”
How do I verify recognition?
There is no NMC foreign-university whitelist. Accreditation (national agency, WFME-recognised accreditor, WDOMS listing) is not an Indian licence. For India-practice students, recognition means: FMGL-shaped course + screening exam in force (FMGE as of August 2026) + later Indian internship/SMC. Verify the named course. Counsellor insight 3: “How do I verify recognition?” is the question after someone already fell in love with a city. Invert it. Recognition first, city second. Georgia can fail a split-internship file. A Kyrgyz campus can pass. Flag is not NMC compliance.
What questions should I ask a university?
Ask the registrar / international office, in writing, not only the agent. You want answers you can attach to the offer. If the university will not email, you do not have a counterpart — you have a salesperson.
Send this list (copy, send, keep the reply):
- What is the university’s full legal name in English and in the local language, as it appears on the degree?
- Length of the MBBS/MD programme in months, including whether internship is inside that number.
- Legal name of the internship hospital and whether it is the same institution.
- Medium of instruction for pre-clinical and clinical years — attach MOI if you have one.
- Whether a graduate who is a citizen of your country may obtain a licence to practise on this degree.
- Fee circular: currency, each year’s tuition, fail-year / repeat fee, refund rules, university bank details.
- Hostel: contract party, what mess includes, internship-year housing.
- Intake month and whether a foundation / language year sits before the 54 months.
- Whether any part of the degree is taught in India or at a branch with a different legal name.
- Whom Indian students should email for academic (not marketing) questions after arrival.
In Green Park the offers that later work are the ones where the university answered those ten in an email with a domain that matches the website. The offers that fail are the ones where the family paid because “the consultant has a relationship.” Relationships do not sit FMGE.

What changed in university selection in the last 18–24 months?
The twelve FMGL-shaped checks did not shrink. What families must re-read: 1 April 2026 named-campus Uzbekistan caution; 18 March 2026 online-compensation notice (pipeline COVID/war years — not a 2026-joiner online MBBS); still no NMC positive list. Cheap-country search volume is up; that is a reason to slow check 8 and 10, not skip them. Refund language and MEA advisories belong on the same twelve rows — they are not a new list.
