NMC has warned students not to take admission offers that skip NEET. If the pitch is “MBBS abroad without NEET,” you are not looking at NMC’s MBBS abroad eligibility route. You may still be looking at a foreign classroom. You are not looking at an India-practice file.

Yes — for Indian citizens and OCIs on NMC’s student-abroad route from May 2018 onwards. Screening Test Regulations, 2002 (as amended) and the matching Eligibility Certificate regulations treat the NEET result as the Eligibility Certificate from academic year 2019–20, provided GME eligibility is also met. Keep the scorecard. Count three years from NTA’s declaration date, not from when classes are said to start.
NMC/MCI public notice language on the Screening Test Regulations page reminds Indian citizens/OCI intending to take admission in MBBS or equivalent outside India from academic year 2019–20 that they shall mandatorily qualify NEET, and that the NEET result shall be treated as the eligibility certificate if they also fulfil GME 1997 eligibility for MBBS.

What NEET does not do: allot a foreign seat the way MCC allots Indian seats; waive FMGL or FMGE; or stay valid forever. NMC’s three-year clock starts at result declaration.
A pre-medical or language year abroad can sit inside that three-year window. It does not pause the clock. If the window will close before the admission letter, you need a fresh NEET.
Myth: “Foreign universities don’t ask for NEET, so it is optional if I only want to study, not practise in India.”
Reality: A university can admit you without NEET. NMC’s India-registration route cannot. Offers that skip NEET are the red flag NMC has already warned about. Decide the career geography first; do not discover it in year five.
How many NEET marks are required for MBBS abroad eligibility?
NMC does not publish a special “MBBS abroad cut-off” in marks. You must qualify NEET at the percentile NTA sets for your category that year. For NEET UG 2026, NTA’s result declaration (16 July 2026, after the 21 June re-exam) used the usual percentile floors: 50th for UR/EWS, 40th for OBC/SC/ST, 45th for UR/EWS-PwBD. Journalism of that NTA table reported qualifying marks of 715–213 (UR/EWS) and 212–177 (OBC/SC/ST). Confirm the band on your scorecard and the NTA press-release PDF — marks move every year; percentiles are the rule.

Read the table twice. 213 marks for UR/EWS in 2026 is the qualifying floor NTA published for that session. It is not the rank at which an Indian government MBBS seat closed.
Counsellor insight 2: A “safe” NEET score for MBBS abroad eligibility is the qualifying percentile plus a scorecard still inside three years. Chasing 600 “because FMGE is hard” is exam strategy, not eligibility law. FMGE is a different paper — see FMGE rules.

Is there an age limit for MBBS abroad?
For the NEET gate, NTA’s 2026 eligibility (as summarised from the information bulletin) is a minimum age of 17 years on or before 31 December 2026, and no upper age limit. Foreign universities can still set their own age floors or caps. NMC’s three-year NEET validity is a score clock, not an age clock. Do not conflate “too old for NEET” (there is no upper cap in 2026) with “too late for this scorecard.”

If you are 17 in January and the foreign intake is September, check both NTA’s 31 December rule and the university’s “age at joining” line. They are not always the same day.
What Class 12 / board marks do Indian students need?
NMC points MBBS abroad eligibility to Graduate Medical Education for MBBS — subjects and qualifying-exam floors — and to the live NTA bulletin. In counselling, the Indian frame is Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English, with a 50% PCB aggregate commonly applied to General/UR and 40% to reserved categories, plus a distinct PwBD band in the bulletin. Confirm the live GME text and your NEET year’s NTA bulletin. The foreign university may demand higher.
This is the India-student context that actually decides September files:
- Boards: CBSE, ISC and state boards sit under “qualifying examination” as GME/NTA define it that year. A state-board 48% General PCB is not rescued by a strong NEET if GME still wants 50%.
- Improvement exams: Use the mark sheet NTA and the university will accept.
- PCB vs PCM: Biology/Biotechnology is the medical subject unless the live bulletin creates an exception you can point to.
- University floors: Some faculties publish 60% PCB. That is admission, not NMC.
- Money: Eligibility is not a six-year budget. MBBS abroad fees is the worksheet.
In Green Park the messy MBBS abroad eligibility files are rarely “did not take NEET.” They are a 2023 scorecard used for a 2027 letter, a reserved-category student quoted the General PCB line, or a family who thinks 180 marks is “close enough” in a year when UR qualified at 213. Close is not qualified. Print the scorecard status and the university circular on the same afternoon.
- Download the NTA scorecard and note qualified / not qualified plus the declaration date.
- Write the three-year end-date on a calendar. If a language year is planned, still use that end-date.
- Check Class 12 subjects and PCB aggregate against the live NTA bulletin and GME frame — not against last year’s coaching chart.
- Read the foreign university’s own academic floor (it can be higher).
- Only then shortlist legal entities and run the FMGL circular checks in the FMGE / NMC cluster.

If you want that stack on your mark sheets rather than on a country average, that is a counselling hour.

Passport validity and a medical-fitness certificate are file documents universities and visa desks usually collect. They are not an NMC eligibility waiver. Do not invent a visa duration from a consultant brochure — use the destination embassy checklist after the university issues the offer.
