Is there an NMC-approved university list?
No. There is no live NMC foreign-university whitelist for MBBS or equivalent. “NMC approved university” is search language for a course that can meet current FMGL conditions so you may later sit FMGE (or NExT if it applies to your cohort). Treat any site titled “NMC approved medical colleges abroad list 2026” as a third-party compilation unless it is a caution PDF on nmc.org.in.
What does exist:
- Criteria: FMGL Regulations, 2021 (Gazette 18 November 2021) for students who joined on or after that date.
- Advisories / alert notes: UGMEB repeating FMGL and, at times, naming institutions or offshore arrangements. Example: the 1 April 2026 UGMEB alert note on undergraduate medical courses in Uzbekistan (and related earlier notices) — read the PDF, match legal names, do not convert it into “Uzbekistan is banned.”
- Your job: due diligence. NMC’s student advisory puts the onus of disqualification on the student.

Myth: “If the college is not on NMC’s warning PDF, it is NMC approved.”
Reality: NMC does not publish the positive counterpart. An alert is a caution about that file. Silence about every other campus is not a stamp. Verify the circular anyway.

What does foreign medical university recognition mean for Indian students?
For an Indian citizen or OCI who wants the option to practise in India, foreign medical university recognition means the programme can be argued against current NMC/FMGL conditions at registration time — not that a ministry in Delhi pre-approved the campus. You still need a qualifying NEET result on NMC’s student-abroad route, then the screening exam in force (FMGE as of August 2026). Listing in WDOMS is a directory fact. It is not that file.
NMC is the primary Indian source. Cite it. Do not invent a list it refuses to publish.
On For Students to Study Abroad, the Commission states that the erstwhile MCI list of foreign institutions is not an endorsement, and that “the National Medical Commission does not endorse any list of Foreign Medical Institutions/ Universities for MBBS or equivalent course.” It tells families to confirm fee structure and course details — content, duration and internship commensurate with MBBS in India — directly from the university.

No. WDOMS and its About page state that listing a medical school does not denote recognition, accreditation, or endorsement by the World Directory, WFME, FAIMER, or sponsors unless expressly stated. WDOMS is a joint WFME + FAIMER directory of schools that offer a basic medical qualification. It is not NMC’s licence, and it is not automatic ECFMG/USMLE eligibility.

ECFMG’s certification pages state that if there is no ECFMG Sponsor Note on the Sponsor Notes tab of the school’s WDOMS listing, students and graduates are not eligible for ECFMG Certification. That is a United States file. It still does not replace NMC/FMGL for India.

No foreign medical graduate shall be granted permanent registration unless they have completed at least fifty-four months of course, a twelve-month internship in the same foreign institution, an English-medium degree, Schedule-I subjects, a local licence at par with citizens of the awarding country, a supervised twelve-month internship in India after applying to the Commission, and NExT or such other mandated test.

- Confirm a qualifying NEET result inside NMC’s three-year window from declaration — is NEET required for MBBS abroad.
- Write the university’s full registered name in English and in the local script if the offer uses both. Drop the brand nickname.
- Open the live university domain (not a consultant landing page). Download the MBBS/MD circular for your intake: duration in months, language, internship hospital, fees by year, intake size.
- Search search.wdoms.org for that legal name. Match city and operational status. Read the listing disclaimer.
- Search nmc.org.in public notices, advisories and alert notes for that exact campus, branch, and any Indian “offshore” pairing.
- Confirm with the destination’s medical regulator or ministry that the degree is a licence to practise for local graduates — the test FMGL names. Embassy confirmation language still appears in NBEMS FMGE eligibility summaries; use the live bulletin.
- Pay only the university account printed on the offer. Then follow that country’s official student-visa/residence checklist — not a WhatsApp fee PDF.

What documents should I look for?
Before the first instalment: NEET scorecard (qualified + declaration date), university offer in the legal name, fee circular, curriculum/MOI that covers clinical years, internship posting letterhead of the same institution, and a local-licence statement you can point to. How do I check if an exam / degree is recognised? There is no single Indian dropdown. For India, recognition is the FMGL + screening stack, not a university badge. For that country, read the medical council or ministry page that says whether their graduates may practise. For a US exam path, WDOMS Sponsor Notes + ECFMG — only if that is a real plan, not a brochure extra.
What should Indian families verify in 2026 — money, names, and notices?
This is the India-student hour: education loans, relatives forwarding PDFs, and a country that looked cheap until the circular was in Hindi-script legal names.
- Loans fund paper, not FMGL. HDFC Credila, SBI, Axis and similar (examples, not endorsements) will not sit FMGE for you. If India is the plan, finish the steps above before the disbursement rush.
- Legal name vs marketing name. “International Medical University, City X” on Instagram and “State Medical Institute named after Y” on WDOMS are how files fail. Match character-for-character.
- April 2026 Uzbekistan file: UGMEB issued Alert Note U-15021/1/2024-UGMEB dated 1 April 2026 on undergraduate medical courses in Uzbekistan, referring back to earlier notices (including 8 August 2023, 22 November 2024, 19 May 2025, 21 July 2025).
