Study in UK Visa Changes: Still Worth It?

TL;DR

The recent UK visa changes did not close the Student route. They cut the Graduate visa to 18 months from 1 January 2027 applications, raise living-cost proof from 30 November 2026, and tightened sponsor checks from June 2026. The UK can still fit a fundable one-year master’s. It is weaker if you needed two Graduate years, a partner on a taught course, or a longer stay-back. Ireland, Germany and Canada each trade different official rules. None is automatically better.

Definition

The UK’s recent visa changes are the Student and Graduate rule updates that affect Indian applicants after 2024–2026 reforms: dependant limits on taught courses, a higher Student fee, a dated maintenance uplift, tighter sponsor compliance, and a shorter Graduate grant from 1 January 2027. They are immigration rules. They are not a ranking of universities and not a promise of a job.

The UK visa changes are being read as a verdict on the country. They are a verdict on dates. Global Edge, counselling from Green Park, New Delhi, still uses SPEC9 profile evaluation: budget, English, and whether 18 months after a master’s is enough. The hub is Study in UK. The dated rule list is Study in UK in 2027: What Has Changed for Indian Students?.

What do recent UK immigration changes mean?

What do the UK visa changes mean for someone applying now?

Quick answer

A CAS is still required, a taught master’s still does not bring a partner, living costs still need a 28-day hold, and the Graduate visa is 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027. The Student fee is Β£558. Sponsors face a refusal rate under 5 percent from June 2026. That is a tighter file, not a ban on Indian students.

Rule As of 27 September 2026 Career / family impact
Graduate visa 2 years if applied by 31 Dec 2026; 18 months from 1 Jan 2027; PhD 3 years A 2026 start that finishes in 2027 is usually 18 months
Student living costs Β£1,529 / Β£1,171 a month until you apply on or after 30 Nov 2026 The bank date matters more than the course year
Student visa fee Β£558 Separate from the health surcharge
Dependants Taught master’s after 1 Jan 2024: generally no Plan housing in India unless the course is research or government-sponsored
Sponsor checks Refusal under 5%; enrolment at least 95% from 1 June 2026 Do not hold a CAS you will not use
Evidence

A Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. You must be in the UK, on a Student visa, and the provider must have reported successful completion. The visa cannot be extended.

Official guidance

“If your postgraduate level course starts on or after 1 January 2024, it must be either a PhD or other doctorate (RQF level 8), or a research-based higher degree.”

The money page still showed those monthly living-cost figures on 27 September 2026. HC 584 raises them from 30 November 2026. Sponsor guidance set the new Basic Compliance Assessment marks from 1 June 2026. UK student rules on English at degree level remain CEFR B2. Appendix Student still allows 20 hours a week in term for a full-time degree at a compliant provider.

Myth check

Myth: The UK visa changes mean Indian students should stop applying.

Reality: The Student route is open. What shortened is the non-doctoral Graduate grant from 2027 applications, plus a higher funds bar from late November 2026. A fundable one-year master’s with a clear job plan can still fit. An unfunded two-year stay-back fantasy does not.

Is the UK still worth it after the Graduate Route was shortened?

Is the UK still worth it after the recent visa changes?

Quick answer

It depends on why you wanted the extra six months. The UK still fits a one-year master’s you can fund, with 18 months to look for skilled work. It is a weaker default if the only reason was a two-year open work visa, a partner on a taught MSc, or a cheap path to settlement. Settlement was never the Student route’s job.

Worth a close look: a one-year master’s you can fund, English that meets the course and CEFR B2, no dependant plan on a taught course, and a job search that can live inside 18 months. A weak default: deposit-only funds, wages used as “proof”, or a plan that only works if stay-back is two years.

The full cost and CAS maths are in Study in UK for Indian Students: The Complete 2026 Guide. The order of steps is in UK Admission Process: Complete Journey from Shortlisting to Arrival.

Did you know?

The Graduate visa fee on GOV.UK is Β£937, plus a healthcare surcharge the same page describes as usually Β£1,035 a year. That bill arrives after the degree. It is not part of the Student visa fee of Β£558.

Should I choose a different country instead?

Should I leave the UK for Ireland, Germany or Canada?

Quick answer

Only if that country’s official work-after-study, English and funds rules fit you better. Ireland can offer a master’s graduate up to 24 months in two 12-month pieces. Germany offers up to 18 months after a German degree. Canada can give a three-year PGWP after an eligible master’s, with caps and language proof still in force. None of those routes is a visa guarantee.

Factor UK Ireland Germany Canada
Typical taught master’s length Often 1 year Often 1 year Often 1.5–2 years Often 1–2 years
Post-study work, official theme Graduate visa: 18 months from 2027 applications; PhD 3 years Stamp 1G: Level 8 = 12 months; Level 9+ = 12 then 12 if job-seeking is shown Up to 18 months to seek skilled work after a German degree Eligible master’s: up to 3-year PGWP (from 15 Feb 2024 rules)
Extra gate for Indian applicants 28-day funds; TB; India not on the differential list Approved English test for study visas from India (mission leaflet) APS; recognised language certificate; MOI-only files from India are high-risk PAL/TAL for many programmes; master’s at a public DLI exempt from PAL from 1 Jan 2026
Family on a taught master’s Generally no, after 1 Jan 2024 course starts Check the Irish permission, not a UK rumour Separate residence rules; do not assume Study-permit family rules are not the UK’s β€” verify IRCC

Ireland’s Third Level Graduate Programme (page dated 28 March 2024) grants Level 8 graduates twelve months, and Level 9 or above twelve months first, then a further twelve if ISD is satisfied the person is seeking graduate-level work. Registration is €300. You apply within six months of the award notice. Destination detail lives on Global Edge’s Study in Ireland hub.

Germany’s Make it in Germany study-visa page describes a residence permit of up to 18 months after a German degree to seek skilled employment, under Section 20 of the Residence Act. The prospects-after-graduation page says that permit is not renewable. From India, treat MOI-only language proof as officially discouraged. Start from Study in Germany.

Canada’s PGWP page allows a three-year permit after a master’s of at least eight months, as of 15 February 2024, if other eligibility is met. Most applicants need language results from 1 November 2024. 2026 allocations still cap PAL/TAL-required permits; master’s and doctoral students at a public DLI do not need a PAL/TAL from 1 January 2026. That is not a study-permit guarantee. See Study in Canada.

What Indian families should weigh after the UK visa changes

The extra six months people miss is real. It is not a closed door. An education loan still has to sit for 28 days. Lenders such as SBI, HDFC Credila, Avanse and Axis do not rewrite UKVI’s format. A three-year Indian bachelor’s is still a course rule. A spouse on a taught master’s was not restored for 2027. A family that can fund one UK year may still prefer that shorter classroom to a two-year programme elsewhere.

Counsellor note

Counsellors see two opposite overreactions. One family drops a fundable UK offer because a cousin said “Graduate is over.” Another ignores Canada’s PAL queue and Germany’s APS clock because a YouTube video said “UK is finished.” These visa changes ask for a calendar, not a panic. The file that works is still the one with money, English and a course the student will finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did the UK visa changes ban Indian students?

No. Indian applicants still use the Student route: licensed sponsor, CAS, funds, English, and a TB test for a stay of six months or more. What changed is Graduate length from 2027 applications, living-cost figures from 30 November 2026, the fee from April 2026, and sponsor metrics from June 2026. A refusal is still a file problem, not a nationality ban.

Is an 18-month Graduate visa too short to bother with?

Not by itself. Eighteen months is still open work for most jobs, with no sponsor on that visa. It is short if your only plan was two years of any work and then settlement. It can be enough if you treat the course year as the job-search year as well. The Graduate visa cannot be extended. Switching to Skilled Worker is a new application.

Should I wait for the Graduate route to go back to two years?

Do not plan an intake on a reversal that is not in the Immigration Rules. Appendix Graduate already writes 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027. If Parliament later changes that, the live GOV.UK page will show it. Waiting a year also moves you into the higher maintenance window after 30 November 2026.

Is Ireland automatically safer than the UK now?

No. Ireland can offer a longer graduate permission after a Level 9 award, in two 12-month stages, with job-seeking evidence for the second year. It still needs an eligible course, an approved English test for a study visa from India, and funds the Irish mission will accept. Compare the course and the bank, not only the stay-back headline.

Does Canada’s three-year PGWP make the UK pointless?

Only if you can actually get the study permit and you meet PGWP rules, including language proof for most applicants since November 2024. Canada also runs a student cap and PAL/TAL rules for many programmes. A three-year work permit you never reach is not better than an 18-month Graduate visa you can fund. Read IRCC, not a comparison reel.

Do I still need a TB test under the current UK student rules?

Yes, if you are coming from India for six months or more. These changes did not remove India from the TB country list. The certificate lasts six months from the x-ray, so do not book it the week the offer arrives if the CAS is months away.

The Bottom Line

  • Takeaway 1: The UK visa changes tightened dates and funds. They did not delete the Student route.
  • Takeaway 2: The UK still fits many one-year master’s profiles that can hold 28-day funds and accept 18 months after 2027 Graduate applications.
  • Takeaway 3: Ireland, Germany and Canada are alternatives with their own official gates β€” not automatic upgrades.

Global Edge can put those four calendars next to one profile in Green Park. The country that fits is the one you can fund and finish.

Quick summary

Is the UK still a good study destination after these visa changes?

It depends on budget, family plans, and whether 18 months after a master’s is enough.

The UK can still fit when:

  • A one-year master’s is the academic goal and the 28-day funds are real
  • You do not need a partner on a taught Student visa
  • You can use an 18-month Graduate visa as a job-search window, not as settlement

Look harder at another country when:

  • Two years of open work was the only reason to choose the UK
  • You cannot hold maintenance for 28 days
  • Ireland, Germany or Canada matches the course and the official work-after-study rule more closely
