UK Admission Process: Shortlisting to Arrival

TL;DR

The UK admission process runs in this order: shortlist, apply, offer, meet conditions, CAS, tuberculosis test where required, Student visa, then travel only after the visa start date. An offer is not a visa. From outside the UK you can apply at the earliest six months before the course, and UKVI usually decides within three weeks. For a September master’s, start about 10 to 14 months ahead so funds can sit still for 28 days.

Definition

This process is the path from choosing a course to enrolling on it. It includes the university’s decision (offer, conditions, CAS) and a separate Student visa decision by UK Visas and Immigration. Shortlisting is not an application. An offer is not a CAS. A CAS is not permission to board a flight.

Families lose a season in this process when they celebrate the offer and only then meet the bank rule, the TB certificate and the CAS. Global Edge, from Green Park in New Delhi, uses SPEC9 profile evaluation so the deposit is not the first serious decision. Costs and the Graduate route are on Study in UK for Indian Students: The Complete 2026 Guide.

What is the UK admission process, in order?

What happens after I decide to study in the UK?

Quick answer

Deciding does not finish the process. You still shortlist courses you can fund, apply, take an offer, clear its conditions, and only then receive a CAS. The Student visa comes after the CAS. Outside the UK, UKVI usually decides within three weeks. You open an eVisa and travel no earlier than the date on it.

Step by step
  1. Shortlist against marks, English, budget, and whether a partner must travel.
  2. Sit the English test the course and the visa both need. Degree level is CEFR B2 on the visa side.
  3. Apply to the university, or through UCAS if the course is undergraduate.
  4. Write down every condition on the offer and its deadline.
  5. Pay only the deposit asked. Leave the maintenance money untouched.
  6. Meet the conditions so the sponsor can assign a CAS.
  7. Take a TB test at an approved clinic if the stay will be six months or more.
  8. Apply for the Student visa with the CAS, the funds and the TB certificate.
  9. Link the eVisa to the passport you will fly on. Travel only on or after the visa start date.
  10. Enrol when the university says so. A CAS you do not use is a sponsor problem as well as a personal one.

Master’s files usually go direct to each university. Undergraduates usually apply through UCAS instead, with an earlier date for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine. Confirm the year on UCAS. If the offer mentions ATAS, read Academic Technology Approval Scheme guidance before the visa. It does not replace the CAS.

How long does the UK admission process take?

How long does it take from shortlist to enrolment?

Quick answer

For a September master’s, this often needs 10 to 14 months from shortlist to enrolment. That is planning, not a legal deadline. Outside the UK you may apply from six months before the course, a decision usually takes three weeks, and a TB certificate lasts six months from the x-ray.

Stage September master’s What “done” means
Shortlist, budget, English About 10–14 months before A list you can pay for
Applications Often 8–12 months before Files submitted
Offer and conditions Often months before the CAS Conditions written down
CAS After conditions, commonly spring to summer CAS number issued
TB test Inside the 6-month certificate life Approved-clinic certificate
Student visa From 6 months before; usually within 3 weeks outside the UK eVisa available
Travel and enrolment Not before the visa date; up to 1 month early if the course exceeds 6 months You have enrolled
Evidence

From outside the UK, the earliest Student visa application is six months before the course starts. You will usually get a decision within three weeks. If the course lasts more than six months you may arrive up to one month before it starts, and you must not travel before the start date on the visa.

The 10-to-14-month range exists so those official clocks are not all running in one fortnight. A January intake compresses the stages. It does not remove the 28-day funds hold.

Where the offer, the CAS and the visa sit

Does an offer end the admission journey?

Quick answer

No. An offer is the university’s decision, often with conditions still open. A CAS is what a licensed sponsor assigns for the Student visa. UKVI takes the fee figure from the CAS. Paying a deposit does not assign the CAS and does not let you fly. Travel starts only on or after the visa start date.

Document Who issues it What it allows
Offer The university A place, if conditions are met
CAS A licensed Student sponsor The reference in the visa application
eVisa UKVI, after a grant The record you travel on

UKVI’s money page asks for CAS course fees and living costs of Β£1,529 a month in London or Β£1,171 outside London, for up to nine months, unless an exception applies. Funds must be held 28 days, ending within 31 days of the application. India is not on the differential evidence list.

Evidence

Living costs are Β£1,529 per month in London and Β£1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months. The 28-day period must end within 31 days of the application. India is not named on the differential evidence list on this page.

A TB test is required for six months or more from a listed country, and India is listed. The certificate lasts six months from the x-ray. Degree-level English is CEFR B2. A course waiver does not automatically meet the visa route.

Myth check

Myth: An unconditional offer ends the admission process, so the flights can be booked.

Reality: The CAS, a TB certificate if required, a 28-day funds period and a visa decision still sit between that email and the airport. You must not travel before the start date on the visa.

Did you know?

A successful Student application produces an eVisa in a UKVI account linked to the passport you will fly on. There is no BRP card to collect after landing.

What Indian families should prepare

Parents often move money only after the offer. The visa wants it already still for 28 days. A transfer on the morning of the appointment restarts that clock. A loan from SBI, HDFC Credila, Avanse or Axis counts only when the letter matches UKVI finance guidance. A payout after the visa is not funds already held.

Keep transcripts, the passport and the English score ready before the portal closes. A three-year Indian bachelor’s is a course-page question, not a UKVI percentage. Appendix Student allows 20 hours a week in term for a full-time degree at a compliant provider. That cap is not a reason to show less money.

Counsellor note

The same sequence error shows up in two files. One student books flights on a conditional offer, the pending result never clears, and the CAS never comes. Another pays tuition from the maintenance account five days before the visa date and breaks a clean 28-day balance. Neither is a hidden refusal trick. Both are order.

What changed in the UK admission process for 2026?

Which 2026 rules change the steps?

Quick answer

The order is the same. The pressure is not. From 1 June 2026, sponsor assessments need refusal under 5 percent, enrolment at least 95 percent, and completion at least 85 percent. The Student visa fee is Β£558 from 8 April 2026. Maintenance rises on 30 November 2026. A non-doctoral Graduate application from 1 January 2027 is 18 months.

Those marks are in student sponsor compliance guidance. Completion must be at least 90 percent from 1 June 2027. Accept a CAS only if you will enrol. The Student visa overview shows Β£558. Fee tables from 8 April 2026 record the rise from Β£524. IHS guidance sets Β£776 a year for students on applications from 6 February 2024.

HC 584 (3 September 2026) raises maintenance from 30 November 2026 to match 2026/27 home loans. Until then, use Β£1,529 and Β£1,171, then re-read the money page. Graduate length is a later stage, not an admission step. A Β£925 provider levy from 1 August 2028 is not a 2026 visa fee.

What did not change: the offer is not the visa, the 28-day rule still applies, India still needs a TB test for six months or more, and you still must not fly early. Guidance only. Re-check GOV.UK in the week you file.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have an unconditional offer. Can I book the flight?

Not yet. You still need a CAS, a visa decision and an eVisa linked to your passport. You must not travel before the start date on the visa. If the course is longer than six months you may arrive up to one month early, but only inside that visa date. A refundable fare is a personal choice, not permission to enter.

When should the TB test be booked?

After you can see the visa month, and before you apply. The certificate lasts six months from the x-ray, and a stay of six months or more from India needs it. A test taken the week the offer arrives can expire while conditions or funds are still open. Use a clinic on the Home Office approved list.

How early can I apply for the Student visa?

Six months before the course, if you are outside the UK. You also need a CAS, and the 28-day funds period must end within 31 days of the application. UKVI usually decides within three weeks for applications outside the UK. That usual time is not a guarantee. Priority services exist only where they are offered.

Does a loan that pays out after the visa count as the 28-day balance?

Do not assume it does. A student loan counts when the letter matches the finance guidance. A payout that reaches the university only after the visa, or money moved between family accounts in the last week, may fail the 28-day test. Read the guidance against the actual letter before you book biometrics.

Do UK master’s applications go through UCAS?

Usually no. A master’s application is normally direct, with that university’s form, deadline and deposit. UCAS is the usual undergraduate route. A January start, a pre-master’s or a research degree can use another form. Follow the course page rather than one shared login.

What should I do in the first week after landing?

Enrol, as the joining instructions say, and keep proof. From June 2026 sponsors are assessed on an enrolment rate of at least 95 percent. Open the eVisa on the passport you will fly with before you travel. Housing and a local SIM come after registration, not instead of it.

The Bottom Line

  • Takeaway 1: The sequence is shortlist, application, offer, conditions, CAS, TB test if required, Student visa, then travel on the visa date.
  • Takeaway 2: A September master’s often needs 10 to 14 months. The visa window opens only six months before the course.
  • Takeaway 3: In 2026, also plan for tighter sponsor checks, a Β£558 visa fee, and a maintenance increase on 30 November 2026.

Global Edge can read the offer and the bank statement together in Delhi. The sponsor assigns the CAS. UKVI decides the visa.

Quick summary

Is the process finished when the offer arrives?

No.

It’s on track when:

  • The CAS, the TB certificate and a 28-day funds period are separate dates
  • The visa is filed no earlier than six months before the course, from outside the UK
  • Travel is booked only after the visa start date

It’s in trouble when:

  • Flights are booked on a conditional offer
  • Tuition is paid from the maintenance account in the last week
  • A CAS is accepted for a course you will not start
