UK eligibility after 12th depends on your board, your subjects and the university. Birmingham, for example, asks 75% to 90% from CBSE, ISC or Maharashtra, and 80% to 95% from other state boards, for direct first-year entry. Cambridge usually wants qualifications beyond Class XII. Below direct entry, pathway programmes publish 50% to 55% minimums. Most 2027-entry UCAS applications close for equal consideration on 13 January 2027.
UK eligibility after 12th is whether an Indian Class 12 result meets a UK university’s published entry rule for first-year undergraduate study, or for a pathway programme that leads to it. Pathway options include an International Foundation Year and an International Year One. The Student visa is a separate check by UK Visas and Immigration.

UK eligibility after 12th is decided on a university’s India page, not on a percentage a relative remembers. Global Edge, counselling from Green Park, New Delhi, uses SPEC9 profile evaluation to match board, subjects and budget to a realistic course list. Every level is covered in Study in UK Requirements for Indian Students.
How much percentage is needed after 12th for UK universities?
How much percentage do I need after 12th for UK universities?
The percentage needed after 12th is set by each university and board. Birmingham asks 90% from CBSE, ISC or Maharashtra for an A*AA-equivalent offer and 75% for ABB or BBB. Other state boards need 80% to 95%. Cambridge usually expects additional qualifications beyond Class XII. Check your board on the course page.
| Birmingham offer | CBSE / ISC / Maharashtra | West Bengal | Other state boards |
|---|---|---|---|
| A*AA | 90% | 85% | 95% |
| AAA | 85% | 80% | 90% |
| AAB | 80% | 75% | 85% |
| ABB / BBB | 75% | 75% | 80% |
Holders of the Indian Standard XII are considered for first-year entry to Birmingham’s undergraduate degrees. An A*AA offer maps to 90% for ISC, CBSE or Maharashtra, 85% for West Bengal, or 95% for other state boards. ABB or BBB maps to 75% for ISC, CBSE, Maharashtra and West Bengal, or 80% for other state boards.

At the most selective end, Class XII alone is often not enough.
“You are strongly recommended to undertake further study if you: are studying for Class XII qualifications issued by a board other than CBSE; wish to apply to a College that does not accept CBSE Class XII qualifications; wish to apply for a course that does not accept CBSE Class XII qualifications.”
Source: University of Cambridge β International entry requirements | https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/international-students/international-entry-requirements
Cambridge’s page lists A levels, the IB, or five AP tests at score 5 with A1 grades in Class XII as suitable additions. Where CBSE is accepted, minimum offers are A1 in five relevant subjects.
Do subjects matter for UK eligibility after 12th?
Do subject combinations in 12th matter for UK admission?
Yes. Many courses require specific Class 12 subjects at a set mark, on top of the overall percentage. Birmingham’s five-year Medicine asks for 85% overall, including Chemistry and a second science from Biology, Physics or Mathematics, plus Class X marks. Engineering and computer science often need mathematics. A high overall score without the required subject can still fail.
Birmingham also maps individual A-level subject grades to Class 12 marks: an A* equals 90% for CBSE, ISC or Maharashtra, an A equals 85%, and a B equals 80%. If a course asks for A in Mathematics, you need that mark in Mathematics, not just overall.
- Commerce without mathematics can close some economics and data courses.
- Science students switching to law or humanities usually have more flexibility.
- Medicine and dentistry have their own India rules, often including Class X.
Birmingham’s Medicine entry page states the 85% overall rule with Chemistry and a second science, and 85% in Class X Biology, Chemistry, English and Mathematics.
Myth: If my overall Class 12 percentage is high enough, any UK course will accept me.
Reality: Overall percentage is only one line. Many courses name required subjects and a mark in each. Birmingham’s Medicine page also checks Class X subject marks. Read the subject requirement on the course page before choosing it.
What if I don’t meet direct-entry UK eligibility after 12th?
Are there pathway or foundation options if my percentage is lower?
Yes. International Foundation Year and International Year One programmes publish lower Class 12 minimums. The Sussex International Study Centre asks 50% overall for International Year One, and Kingston’s asks 55% with 50% in mathematics, English and relevant subjects. Progression to the degree depends on passing the pathway at the required grade. It is not automatic.
| Pathway (published India minimum) | Class 12 requirement | Other published conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Sussex ISC β International Year One | 50% overall; 50% in relevant subjects | Academic IELTS 5.5; turn 18 by 1 September of progression year |
| Kingston ISC β International Year One | 55%, with 50% in Maths, English and relevant subjects | Age 17+; IELTS for UKVI 5.5 in all skills |
| LJMU ISC β International Year One | 50% overall; 50% in Maths, English and relevant subjects | A SELT is mandatory for applicants from listed Indian states |
These figures are from each study centre’s own entry page: Sussex ISC, Kingston ISC and LJMU ISC. LJMU lists states including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan where a Secure English Language Test is mandatory. A pathway adds a year of fees and living costs. Build that into the budget.
The visa level can differ too. UKVI’s English page sets CEFR B1 below degree level and B2 at degree level. Appendix Student allows 10 hours a week in term for full-time study below degree level at a compliant higher-education provider, and 20 hours at degree level.
If you are between the direct-entry and pathway figures, Global Edge can compare both routes for your board in Delhi β book a SPEC9 profile evaluation.

What Indian families should plan around UK eligibility after 12th
Board results in India usually arrive in May, after most UCAS deadlines. That is normal. Offers are conditional, and the final marksheet confirms them.
A 16- or 17-year-old needs parental consent for the Student visa. Some pathway providers also set age limits, as Sussex does. The visa still needs a CAS, funds on the money page (Β£1,529 a month in London or Β£1,171 outside London, up to nine months, held 28 days), and a TB test from India. Living-cost figures rise from 30 November 2026, per Study in UK in 2027: What Has Changed.
A foundation year means four years of fees for a three-year degree. For some families, that is still cheaper than a year of coaching and a reapplication. For others, a direct-entry university with a slightly lower ranking fits better. Costs are in Study in UK for Indian Students: The Complete 2026 Guide.
A familiar case: a state-board science student with 82% applies to three universities using CBSE figures and misses all three by the state-board line. The next cycle, the same marksheet gets two direct offers and one International Year One offer. Nothing changed in the marks. The applications were matched to the right column.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum UK eligibility after 12th?
There is no single UK minimum. Direct first-year entry at Birmingham starts at 75% for CBSE, ISC or Maharashtra, and 80% for other state boards. Pathway programmes publish lower figures, such as 50% at the Sussex study centre or 55% at Kingston’s. Check the page of the university and the route you are applying to.
Does 60% meet UK eligibility after 12th?
Usually not for direct entry at a selective university, where published figures start around 75%. You may meet International Year One or foundation minimums, which several study centres list at 50% to 55%, with subject and English conditions. Some universities with lower direct-entry figures exist. Compare the published number for your board.
Does NIOS or a state board lower my chances?
Not automatically. It changes the percentage you need. Birmingham asks 5 points more from other state boards than from CBSE or ISC for the same offer. LJMU’s study centre lists NIOS at 55% instead of 50%. Find your board’s own row before shortlisting.
Can I apply before my Class 12 results?
Yes. UCAS applications are made with predicted grades from your school, and offers are usually conditional on final results. For 2027 entry, most courses close for equal consideration on 13 January 2027, and Oxford, Cambridge and medicine on 15 October 2026. Final board results then confirm or miss the offer.
Is a foundation year worth it for Indian students?
It can be, if the linked degree fits and you can fund an extra year. A foundation or International Year One lowers the Class 12 entry bar, but progression depends on passing at the required grade. English and visa levels may differ from the degree. Compare it against direct entry at another university.
Does UK eligibility after 12th need IELTS?
Sometimes. Some universities accept a Class 12 English mark for admission; Birmingham lists 70% to 80% bands for certain courses. Some study centres require a SELT for listed Indian states. The visa needs CEFR B2 at degree level or B1 below it. Confirm how the CAS will record your English.
The Bottom Line
- Takeaway 1: UK eligibility after 12th is set by each university, per board and per subject. Birmingham’s example range is 75% to 95%.
- Takeaway 2: Required subjects can matter as much as the overall percentage, especially for medicine, engineering and computing.
- Takeaway 3: Pathways publish 50% to 55% minimums, cost an extra year, and require progression grades.
