UK Masters eligibility depends on the university, your Indian institution and the course. Several universities publish 60% as the Indian equivalent of a UK 2:1 and 55% as a 2:2, including Sheffield and Lincoln. Leeds lists 60% for a 2:1 and 55% for a 2:2. Edinburgh starts at 60%, or 55% for listed universities. Selective courses ask more: Imperial’s 2:1 band is 65% to 70%. Subject match and English also count.
UK Masters eligibility is whether an Indian bachelor’s degree meets a UK university’s published entry rule for a taught master’s. That rule usually names a UK classification, such as a 2:1 or 2:2, and translates it into an Indian percentage or CGPA. It can also require a relevant subject, a minimum degree length, and English. The Student visa is a separate check.

UK Masters eligibility is usually decided by a single line on a university’s India page. Families lose applications by reading the wrong line: a CBSE-style rumour, another university’s table, or a 2:2 figure for a 2:1 course. Global Edge, counselling from Green Park, New Delhi, uses SPEC9 profile evaluation to read that line against the transcript. Every level is covered in Study in UK Requirements for Indian Students.
What qualification and percentage do you need for UK Masters eligibility?
What qualification and percentage do I need for a UK Masters?
For UK Masters eligibility you need a recognised bachelor’s degree at the classification the course names. Sheffield and Lincoln publish 60% as a 2:1 equivalent and 55% as a 2:2. Leeds uses the same 60% and 55%. Edinburgh starts at 60%, or 55% for its listed Indian universities. Selective courses can ask 65% or more.
| University (India page) | 2:1 equivalent | 2:2 equivalent | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheffield | 60% | 55% | First = 70%; may vary by institution and course |
| Lincoln | 60% or CGPA 6.0 | 55% or CGPA 5.5 | Pre-Master’s if below entry |
| Leeds | 60% (First class) | 55% (Upper second) | 3β4 year degree |
| Edinburgh | Minimum 60% / 8 CGPA | β | 55% / 7 CGPA for listed universities |
| Imperial (Tier 1 institutions) | 65% (“2A”) | 60% (“2B”) | Tier 2: 70% and 65% |
You will usually need a 3 or 4 year bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in a relevant subject. Most postgraduate courses require a UK 2:1 or equivalent, but some may consider a 2:2. Sheffield lists 70% as a First, 60% as a 2:1 and 55% as a 2:2, and says the score required depends on the university attended and the course.

The same Indian percentage can land differently. Imperial splits Indian institutions into tiers. For a course needing a 2:1 (“2A”), Tier 1 institutions such as IISc, the University of Delhi, JNU and BITS need 65%; Tier 2 institutions need 70%. Affiliated or autonomous colleges of Tier 1 universities fall under Tier 2.
What is the minimum percentage UK universities accept for a Masters?
What is the minimum percentage UK universities actually accept?
Among the university India pages checked, the lowest published translation is usually 55% for a 2:2. Sheffield, Lincoln and Leeds all use 55%. Edinburgh accepts 55% only from graduates of its listed Indian universities, not their affiliated colleges. Many courses still ask for a 2:1, around 60%. Below that, a Pre-Master’s can be an option.
Edinburgh’s India page is explicit: 60% or a CGPA of 8 is the minimum, 55% or 7 applies to listed universities, and colleges affiliated to those universities must meet the standard figure. It also says many programmes need a high First in practice.
Myth: Any UK university will take a 50% Indian degree for a Masters.
Reality: The published translations on these university pages start at 55% for a 2:2 and 60% for a 2:1. Selective courses go higher. Below the entry figure, some universities offer a Pre-Master’s, which Lincoln lists for Indian graduates who do not meet master’s entry. That is an extra course, not a waiver.

Does your undergraduate subject need to match for UK Masters eligibility?
Does my undergraduate subject need to match my Masters subject?
Often yes, and some courses are strict. Manchester’s MSc Finance asks for a finance or economics degree with a significant number of finance and quantitative courses, and does not count accounting as finance. Its LLM courses mostly require a law degree. Conversion master’s courses exist for career-switchers, but the course page must say so.
Subject match shows up in several forms:
- A named degree: Manchester’s MSc Advanced Computer Science typically looks for at least 50% computer science content.
- Required modules: quantitative, programming or finance credits listed on the transcript.
- Conversion routes: some MSc courses in data, management or law are built for a different first degree.
“You need a degree in finance or economics. You must have taken a significant number of finance and quantitative courses during your degree (accounting is not considered to be finance).”

What else counts for UK Masters eligibility besides graduation marks?
Graduation marks open the door. These also decide it:
| Check | Where it is published | Common trap |
|---|---|---|
| Degree length | University India page | Assuming a three-year BCom is fine everywhere |
| Institution tier | Some India pages (e.g. Imperial, Edinburgh) | Affiliated college treated as the parent university |
| Grading scale | Transcript or official letter | Arithmetic average instead of the weighted average asked |
| English | Course page and CAS | Using a Class 12 English waiver for the visa |
| Documents | Course page | No CV when graduation was more than three years ago |
Edinburgh asks for your university’s grading scheme. Manchester’s MSc Advanced Computer Science page asks for a weighted average mark as a percentage, and a CV if you graduated more than three years ago.
UKVI’s English page sets CEFR B2 for degree-level study; a higher-education provider can assess it itself. Sheffield asks for IELTS 6.5 or equivalent at master’s level. The visa also needs a CAS, funds on the money page (Β£1,529 a month in London or Β£1,171 outside London, up to nine months, held 28 days), and a TB test from India.
Imperial treats affiliated or autonomous colleges of Tier 1 universities such as the University of Delhi under its Tier 2 figures, so the same 65% can meet a 2:1 at one and miss at another.

What Indian students should check before applying for a UK Masters
Indian transcripts use percentages, CGPAs on 10, and letter grades. Universities want your institution’s own conversion, not a website calculator. Get an official grading-scale letter early.
Backlogs usually matter less than the final aggregate, but a course can still ask about them. Work experience rarely replaces a missing classification, though MBA and some management courses ask for it.
As of September 2026, no UK government rule sets a national master’s percentage. Visa-side changes did happen: living-cost figures rise from 30 November 2026, and the Graduate visa is 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 β see Study in UK in 2027: What Has Changed. Costs are in Study in UK for Indian Students: The Complete 2026 Guide.
A regular counselling pattern: a 62% graduate from an affiliated college applies to five courses using the parent university’s figure, and to two courses that name finance modules she never took. Two offers came from the courses whose published line matched. The other five were not bad luck. They were the wrong line on the page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 60% enough for UK Masters eligibility?
At many universities, yes for a course asking for a 2:1. Sheffield, Lincoln and Leeds publish 60% as a 2:1 equivalent. Edinburgh’s minimum is also 60%. Selective courses can ask more, such as Imperial’s 65% to 70% for a 2:1 depending on institution tier. Check the course’s required classification first.
Can I get a UK Masters with 55%?
Sometimes, where a course accepts a 2:2. Sheffield, Lincoln and Leeds publish 55% as a 2:2 equivalent. Edinburgh accepts 55% only from graduates of its listed Indian universities. Many courses still ask for a 2:1. If you are below the line, look for a Pre-Master’s or a course that names a 2:2.
Do UK universities look at my college or just my percentage?
Some look at both. Imperial publishes different percentages for Tier 1 and Tier 2 Indian institutions, and Edinburgh lists universities that get a lower minimum. Affiliated colleges are often assessed differently from the parent university. Manchester says it considers the standing of your institution.
Does UK Masters eligibility allow a subject switch?
Yes, on courses built for it. Many specialist MSc courses need a related degree or named modules, such as Manchester’s MSc Finance. Conversion master’s courses in areas like data, management or law accept other backgrounds. Read the entry requirement for the exact course, not the subject in general.
Do I need work experience for UK Masters eligibility?
Not for most taught master’s courses. Degree classification, subject match and English usually decide entry. MBA and some management courses ask for work experience, and scholarships such as Chevening require it. Work experience rarely replaces a missing percentage, though it can help explain a career switch in your statement.
Is IELTS mandatory for a UK Masters?
Not always. Degree-level study needs CEFR B2 for the visa, and a higher-education provider can assess that itself. Many universities ask for IELTS 6.5 or an equivalent test for master’s entry, and some accept a Class 12 English mark for admission. Confirm how your CAS will record English.
The Bottom Line
- Takeaway 1: UK Masters eligibility is set by each university: 60% for a 2:1 and 55% for a 2:2 is common, but not universal.
- Takeaway 2: Your institution’s tier, degree length and subject modules can change the figure you need.
- Takeaway 3: Admission and the Student visa are separate. English, funds, the CAS and a TB test still apply.

Am I eligible for a UK Masters with my Indian degree?
It depends on your percentage, your institution, your subject and the course.
You are likely on track when:
- Your percentage meets the course’s published 2:1 or 2:2 figure
- Your degree subject and modules match the course
- You have an official grading scale and English that meets B2
Look again when:
- You are using the parent university’s figure from an affiliated college
- The course names modules you did not take
- You are below 55%, where a Pre-Master’s may be the route
