UK study requirements are set course by course, not by one national cut-off. After Class 12, Birmingham, for example, asks 75% to 90% from CBSE, ISC or Maharashtra boards, and more from other state boards. After graduation, it expects roughly 55% to 60% for a 2:1 equivalent, and often a first class from a three-year degree. The Student visa then adds CEFR B2 English at degree level, a CAS, 28-day funds and a TB test from India.
UK study requirements are two separate sets of conditions. The university sets academic entry: board, percentage, subjects, and sometimes a test or interview. UK Visas and Immigration sets the Student visa: a CAS from a licensed sponsor, English at the required CEFR level, funds, and a TB certificate where required. Meeting one set does not meet the other.

UK study requirements are the first thing a worried family searches, and the most copied table on the internet. Most of those tables are wrong in one way: they print one percentage for “the UK”. Global Edge, counselling from Green Park, New Delhi, uses SPEC9 profile evaluation to read the actual course page against the marksheet. The destination hub is Study in UK.
What are the UK study requirements after 12th or after graduation?
What are the requirements to study in the UK after 12th?
After Class 12, UK undergraduate entry depends on the university, the course and your board. Birmingham maps Standard XII to A-level offers: 75% to 90% for CBSE, ISC or Maharashtra, and up to 95% for other state boards. Subject grades can apply too. Most 2027-entry UCAS courses close for equal consideration on 13 January 2027.
The full after-12th guide, including foundation and International Year One routes, is UK University Eligibility After Class 12: Marks, Subjects and Pathways.
What are the requirements to study in the UK after graduation?
A taught master’s usually asks for a relevant bachelor’s degree at a set classification. Birmingham, for example, treats 55% to 60% or higher as a 2:1 equivalent and 50% to 55% as a 2:2, depending on the Indian institution. Many courses want a first class from a three-year degree. English and the visa sit on top.
| Level | What the university usually checks | What the visa checks |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate after Class 12 | Board, overall %, subject %, sometimes a test | CAS, CEFR B2 English, funds, TB test |
| Foundation / pathway | Lower Class 12 %, English | Often below degree level: CEFR B1 |
| Taught master’s | Degree length, classification, subject match | CAS, CEFR B2 English, funds, TB test |
| Research degree | Master’s at 2:1 or equivalent, proposal | CAS, English, funds, TB test; dependants possible |
Holders of a three- or four-year Indian bachelor’s degree from a recognised university are considered for postgraduate taught study. They are normally expected to have 55% to 60% or higher for 2:1 equivalency, or 50% to 55% for 2:2 equivalency, depending on the awarding institution. Some programmes ask for a first class from a three-year degree.

Does every university have the same UK study requirements?
Does every university have the same requirements?
No. Each UK university, and often each course, publishes its own entry rules for Indian applicants. Birmingham accepts Standard XII directly for first-year entry. Cambridge says Class XII alone is not normally suitable preparation and usually expects additional qualifications such as A levels, the IB, or five AP tests at score 5. Read the course page, not a national average.
“Class XII qualifications issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are accepted by some Colleges for the following courses. You are strongly recommended to undertake further study if you are studying for Class XII qualifications issued by a board other than CBSE.”

Board matters more than families expect. On Birmingham’s own table, the same AAA offer is 85% for CBSE, ISC or Maharashtra, 80% for West Bengal, and 90% for other state boards.
| Birmingham A-level offer | CBSE / ISC / Maharashtra | West Bengal | Other state boards |
|---|---|---|---|
| A*AA | 90% | 85% | 95% |
| AAA | 85% | 80% | 90% |
| AAB | 80% | 75% | 85% |
| ABB / BBB | 75% | 75% | 80% |
That table belongs to one university. Use it to understand how the translation works, then open the page of the university you are applying to.
Myth: The UK has a fixed 60% cut-off for Indian students.
Reality: There is no UKVI or national percentage for admission. Each university converts Indian marks itself. Birmingham’s published range for Class 12 runs from 75% to 95% depending on board and offer, while pathway programmes list 50% to 55%. The visa checks English and funds, not your percentage.
What marks do UK universities ask for?
What marks or percentage do I need?
You need the percentage printed for your board and course. For direct first-year entry at a selective university such as Birmingham, that is 75% to 95% after Class 12. For a master’s, it is often 55% to 60% for a 2:1 equivalent. Below that, pathway programmes publish Class 12 minimums of about 50% to 55%, with conditions.
Percentages are only the first line of UK eligibility. Universities also check:
- Subject grades, such as mathematics for computer science or chemistry for medicine.
- Degree length: some master’s courses want four years, or a first class from three.
- Subject match between the bachelor’s and the master’s.
- English, from a test or, where the university allows it, a Class 12 English mark.
Birmingham’s international entry page shows the English side: for example, 70% in Standard XII English from CBSE, ISC, Maharashtra or West Bengal can stand in for IELTS 6.0 on some courses. That is an admission rule. It does not automatically satisfy the visa.
If the course page and the marksheet do not line up, Global Edge can read them together in Delhi before you pay an application fee β book a SPEC9 profile evaluation.
What does the Student visa add on top of academic requirements?
UKVI’s English page sets CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level. A higher-education provider can assess B2 itself for degree courses. India is not on the exemption list. The money page asks for unpaid tuition on the CAS plus Β£1,529 a month in London or Β£1,171 outside London, for up to nine months, held 28 days. India is on the TB test list. A 16- or 17-year-old needs parental consent.
Degree-level study requires English equivalent to CEFR level B2. Below degree level, the requirement is CEFR B1. If you study at degree level or above with a higher-education provider, that provider can assess your English itself, but it must still be equivalent to B2.

As of September 2026, no government change has created a national UK admission percentage. The visa side did move: living-cost sums rise from 30 November 2026, and the Graduate visa is 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027. The dated list is Study in UK in 2027: What Has Changed for Indian Students?. Costs are in Study in UK for Indian Students: The Complete 2026 Guide.
Birmingham asks 5 percentage points more from other state boards than from CBSE, ISC or Maharashtra for the same AAA offer: 90% instead of 85%.

What Indian families should check about UK study requirements
A state-board marksheet is not a weaker marksheet. It is a different conversion line. Families lose applications when they read a CBSE figure off a blog and apply with a state-board result.
For a master’s, the three-year degree question is real. Birmingham considers three-year degrees but asks for a first class on many programmes, while its Business School also considers a very good upper second from three years. That is one university. Another may want four years.
Backlogs, gaps and an unrelated degree are course-by-course decisions. No UK law bars them. Many universities read the final classification and the reason for a gap, not the number of attempts in isolation. Ask the course team in writing before you pay.
In counselling, the costly error is the wrong column. A Rajasthan-board student reads “80% needed” from a CBSE row and applies to three universities that want 85% or 90% from other state boards. Another family assumes a 58% three-year BCom is a 2:1 everywhere. Both profiles had options. They had applied against the wrong line.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are UK study requirements the same for every Indian board?
No. Many universities print separate figures for CBSE, ISC, Maharashtra, West Bengal and other state boards. Birmingham’s AAA offer is 85% for CBSE, ISC or Maharashtra, 80% for West Bengal, and 90% for other state boards. Always find your board on the university’s India page. A single “Indian” percentage on a blog is usually a CBSE figure.
Do UK universities accept 60%?
It depends on the level and the course. For a master’s, around 55% to 60% can be a 2:1 equivalent at some universities, depending on the awarding institution. For direct first-year undergraduate entry at a selective university, 60% in Class 12 is usually below the published range. Pathway programmes often list 50% to 55%.
Can I study a UK master’s with a three-year bachelor’s from India?
Often yes, but not everywhere on the same terms. Birmingham considers three- and four-year Indian degrees, and asks for a first class from a three-year degree on many programmes. Its Business School also considers a very good upper second. Other universities may prefer four years. Read the course page before applying.
Does a Class 12 English mark replace IELTS?
Sometimes, for admission. Birmingham, for example, lists Standard XII English marks that can meet some IELTS levels. For the visa, degree-level study needs CEFR B2, which a higher-education provider can assess itself. The university must confirm on the CAS how English was assessed. Do not assume the school mark alone covers the visa.
Do UK universities allow backlogs or a study gap?
Many do, course by course. There is no UK-wide rule against backlogs or gaps. Universities usually look at the final result, subject relevance and a clear explanation. A gap can also come up in the visa credibility check. Get the university’s position in writing before paying a deposit.
Do I need work experience for a UK master’s?
Not for most taught master’s courses. Some MBA and management programmes ask for work experience, and Chevening asks for 2,800 hours after graduation. For a standard MSc, the degree classification, subject match and English usually matter more. Check the specific course requirements.
The Bottom Line
- Takeaway 1: UK study requirements are published by each university, per board and per course. There is no national percentage.
- Takeaway 2: Birmingham’s example range is 75% to 95% after Class 12, and about 55% to 60% for a 2:1-equivalent degree before a master’s.
- Takeaway 3: The visa adds CEFR B2 English at degree level, a CAS, funds and a TB test. Admission rules do not replace them.
Global Edge can read your marksheet against the course page in Green Park, New Delhi. The university decides entry. UKVI decides the visa.

Is there one set of UK study requirements for Indian students?
No. It depends on the university, the course, your board and your level of study.
You are likely on track when:
- Your board’s percentage meets the published figure for that course
- Your subject grades and degree length match the course page
- English meets both the course and the visa level
Look again when:
- You are using a CBSE figure for a state-board result
- You assume one UK-wide cut-off
- A school English mark is your only plan for visa English
