Can You Do a UK Master’s After a 3-Year Indian Degree?
Yes, a 3 year degree can lead to a Masters in UK for most taught courses. Sheffield, Leeds, Lincoln and Birmingham publish that they consider three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees. The catch is the grade: Birmingham asks a first class from a three-year degree on many programmes, and Leeds University Business School typically wants a first. Imperial accepts three years for a master’s but not for research. A three-year degree by itself is not a stated Student visa eligibility test; applicants must still meet the course, CAS, English-language and financial requirements.
A 3 year degree for a Masters in UK means applying to a UK taught master’s with a three-year Indian bachelor’s, such as a BA, BCom or BSc, after 10+2. That is 15 years of education. UK universities decide whether and on what grade they accept it. There is no single UK-wide 16-year education rule for all taught master’s courses; each university and course sets its own entry requirements.

A 3 year degree is the most common profile Global Edge sees for a UK Masters, and the most misread. Some families believe the UK refuses 15 years of education. Others believe any three-year degree works everywhere. Neither is true. From Green Park, New Delhi, our SPEC9 profile evaluation reads the exact university line. The percentage side is in UK Masters Eligibility for Indian Students.
Are 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees accepted for a UK Masters?
Is a 3 year degree accepted for Masters in UK?
Yes, at many universities. Sheffield says you usually need a three- or four-year bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university. Leeds and Birmingham also list three-year degrees. Imperial accepts a three-year degree with the required grades for a master’s but not for research. Some courses set a higher grade for three years.
| University | Accepts a 3-year Indian degree for a taught master’s? | Condition published |
|---|---|---|
| Sheffield | Yes (3 or 4 years) | 2:1 = 60%, 2:2 = 55%; may vary by institution |
| Leeds | Yes (3–4 years) | 2:1 = 60%; 2:2 = 55% |
| Leeds University Business School | Yes (3–4 years) | Typically First Class |
| Birmingham | Yes | Many programmes want a first class from three years |
| Imperial | Yes, for master’s | Not for research; grade depends on institution tier |
Holders of a three- or four-year Indian bachelor’s degree from a recognised university are considered for postgraduate taught study. Birmingham expects either a four-year degree with a first class or very good upper second, or a three-year degree with a first class. Its Business School also considers three-year degrees with a first class or very good upper second.

Which factors decide a 3 year degree Masters UK application?
Which factors determine eligibility with a 3-year degree?
Four factors decide it: the university’s rule on degree length, your classification or percentage, your institution’s standing, and whether the master’s is taught or research. Birmingham may want a first class from three years. Imperial uses tiers and blocks three-year degrees from research. Sheffield publishes 60% for a 2:1. Subject match still applies.
“A 3-year Bachelor degree with requisite grades may be accepted for entry to Masters but not research. A 4-year Bachelor or Master’s with requisite grades may be accepted for entry to Masters or Research.”

- Degree length: some programmes treat three years the same as four; others ask a higher grade.
- Grade: a first class or 60%+ opens more three-year routes than a 2:2.
- Institution: Imperial sets 65% for a 2:1 at Tier 1 institutions and 70% at Tier 2.
- Course type: taught MSc or MA is usually open; research degrees often want four years or a master’s.
Leeds University Business School’s equivalents say it typically requires a three- to four-year bachelor’s with a First Class and an official grading scale from your university.
Myth: UK universities do not accept 15 years of education for a Masters.
Reality: Many do. Sheffield, Leeds, Lincoln and Birmingham publish that they consider three-year Indian degrees for taught master’s. What changes is the grade or the course type. Imperial, for example, accepts three years for a master’s but not for research.

Do you need a bridge course for a 3 year degree Masters in UK?
Do I need a bridge course or extra qualification?
Usually not, if you meet the published grade. A bridge course is needed only when a university or course rejects your degree length or grade. Then a Pre-Master’s is the usual UK route: Lincoln, for example, lists a Pre-Master’s for Indian graduates below master’s entry. Another option is choosing a university that accepts three years at your grade.
A Pre-Master’s is a separate course with its own fee and time, often before a one-year master’s. Lincoln’s India page says Indian applicants need a recognised first degree for its Pre-Master’s Business programme. Compare that extra cost against a direct offer elsewhere.
A one-year Indian postgraduate diploma or an Indian master’s can also strengthen a profile, but no single UK rule says it converts three years into four. Ask the university in writing.
| Your profile | Likely route | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 3-year degree, first class / 60%+ | Direct entry at many universities | Course page subject rules |
| 3-year degree, 55%–59% | Courses accepting a 2:2 | Whether the course names a 2:1 |
| 3-year degree, below 55% | Pre-Master’s or other universities | Pre-Master’s fee and progression grade |
| 3-year degree, research ambition | Taught master’s first | Imperial-style “not research” rules |
Does a 3 year degree affect the UK Student visa?
UK Student visa guidance does not specify a minimum length for an applicant’s previous bachelor’s degree. Applicants must still meet the course provider’s admission requirements and all visa conditions. The visa requires a CAS from a licensed sponsor, the applicable English-language requirement (normally CEFR B2 for degree-level study), and funds under the money page: £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 outside London, for up to nine months, held 28 days. Check the current tuberculosis (TB) testing guidance for your country of residence before applying.
One English route does touch degree equivalence. If you use an overseas degree taught in English instead of a test, UKVI’s English page says Ecctis must confirm it is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher. Do not assume that outcome; a test or the university’s own B2 assessment is often simpler.
If your degree was taught in English and was not awarded by a UK institution, you need an assessment from Ecctis, which gives a code confirming the qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher and was taught in English. Otherwise you can pass an approved English test, or a higher-education provider can assess B2 itself for degree-level study.

Imperial’s rule for three-year degrees is course-type based: allowed for a master’s, not for a research degree, even at Tier 1 institutions such as IISc and the University of Delhi.

What Indian graduates should do with a 3 year degree
The 15-years question is louder for some other countries’ credential rules than for UK taught master’s. For the UK, the practical question is simply: what grade does this course ask from a three-year degree?
A three-year BCom with 58% and a three-year BSc with a first class are different files. Shortlist courses that name a 2:2, or a three-year acceptance at your grade. Get an official grading-scale letter from your university, because Leeds Business School and Edinburgh ask for it.
Visa timing still matters more than degree length: funds rise from 30 November 2026, and the Graduate visa is 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 — see Study in UK in 2027. All levels are in Study in UK Requirements for Indian Students.
In counselling, three-year graduates usually fail on selection, not eligibility. One BCom graduate with 61% applies only to business schools asking a first from three years. The next month, the same transcript fits courses that publish 60% for a 2:1 from a three- or four-year degree. The degree length was never the barrier. The shortlist was.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do a Masters in UK after BCom, BA or BSc?
Yes. A three-year BCom, BA or BSc from a recognised Indian university is considered by many UK universities for taught master’s entry. The course decides the grade and subject rules. Birmingham may ask a first class from three years on many programmes, while Sheffield publishes 60% for a 2:1. Check the exact course.
Is 15 years of education enough for a UK Masters?
For many UK taught master’s courses, yes. Universities including Sheffield, Leeds, Lincoln and Birmingham publish that they consider three-year Indian degrees. The grade can be higher for three years at some universities. Research degrees, such as at Imperial, may require four years or a master’s.
Which UK universities accept a 3 year degree for Masters?
Among published India pages: Sheffield, Leeds, Lincoln, Birmingham and Imperial (for taught master’s) consider three-year degrees, with conditions. Leeds University Business School typically wants a First Class. Edinburgh sets a 60% minimum, or 55% for listed universities. Always check the course page.
Will a 3 year degree affect my UK visa?
UK Student visa guidance does not list a three-year bachelor’s degree as a standalone refusal reason. The visa process involves a CAS, the applicable English-language and financial requirements, and any required TB test. Degree equivalence only matters if you prove English with a degree taught in English, where Ecctis must confirm UK bachelor’s equivalence.
Is a Pre-Master’s worth it with a 3 year degree?
Only if no suitable course accepts your degree at your grade. A Pre-Master’s adds time and fees before the master’s. Lincoln lists one for Indian graduates below master’s entry. Compare it with direct offers from universities that accept a three-year degree at your percentage.
Can I do a UK PhD after a 3 year degree and a UK Masters?
Often yes. Imperial, for example, blocks three-year degrees from direct research entry but accepts a master’s with the required grades as the prerequisite for research. A UK taught master’s can therefore become the bridge. Check the doctoral programme’s own rule.
The Bottom Line
- Takeaway 1: A 3 year degree can get you a Masters in UK at many universities. There is no UK-wide 16-year rule for taught courses.
- Takeaway 2: The grade decides it: some universities want a first class from three years, others publish 60% for a 2:1.
- Takeaway 3: Research degrees and some business schools are stricter. The visa has no degree-length rule.
Global Edge can match a three-year transcript to courses that accept it, in Green Park. Universities assess academic admission; UK Visas and Immigration assesses visa applications against the applicable rules.

Can I study a Masters in UK with a 3-year Indian degree?
Yes, for many taught master’s courses — depending on your grade and the course.
You are likely on track when:
- The university publishes that it considers three-year Indian degrees
- Your percentage meets the course’s 2:1 or 2:2 figure
- The course is taught, not a research degree requiring four years
Look again when:
- The course asks a first class from three years and you have a 2:2
- You are targeting direct research entry
- You are below 55%, where a Pre-Master’s may be needed
